Drinking: Not Just For the Mouth

By Karolyn Castaldo on May 3, 2012

College students are known for getting drunk: it’s simply a fact of life. But when you think of college drinking, you think of liquor or beer being consumed through mouths, right? Well, not anymore. Unfortunately, some people are taking it to new, and frankly scary levels as of late.

Mail Online’s, Barbara Davies wrote an article about university students who are now taking shots in their eyes because it got them drunker faster. This craze is called “eyeballing.” The catch? It can cause blindness. Now, I’m all for a good time, but this seems to take it a little too far. In the article, she interviewed a young woman who was eyeballing-for-eyeballing with the school’s rugby team and as a result, has suffered irreparable damage to her vision.

In another recent report from The Los Angeles Times, high school students in California were admitted into the ER for alcohol poisoning from drinking hand sanitizer. Parents were warned to keep an eye out for a trend to emerge out of this incredibly stupid act. However, another article from Yahoo News disputed this fear, saying that the kids drank the hand sanitizer on a dare and that it would probably not become any sort of drinking fad, but who really knows? Judging by these other trending ways to get drunk, it could very well become the next big thing.

Another surprising drinking fad to emerge in the media that is truly sickening has been vodka-soaked tampons, which, as the name suggests, involves soaking tampons in vodka and inserting them. Not only is this disgusting, but it is also dangerous because you cannot gauge how much alcohol is in your system, yielding disastrous results. Though effective, it is certainly not recommended, due to numbers of health risks that could come from it.

Drinking is fine when done safely and in moderation and college is where you learn your boundaries, but I’m not sure who didn’t realize that pouring vodka in your eye, drinking hand sanitizer or inserting an alcohol-tampon wasn’t the best idea for your health. In other words, be smart and drink responsibly, folks.
